Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series are some of the most beloved fantasy books of all time. Though the film adaptation of the first book, The Golden Compass, left a lot of fans disappointed, a new HBO/BBC adaptation looks to change that. Today we’ve got our first proper trailer and it looks absolutely epic.
In case you haven’t read the books–in which case, go and read them now, they’re really good!–the sprawling story centers on young Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) who lives in an alternate multiverse where each person’s soul is kept in a “dæmon” which is essentially a magical animal companion. Lyra lives at Jordan College, Oxford with her duplicitous uncle Asriel (James McEvoy). After her friend is kidnapped by the so-called “Gobblers,” Lyra is pulled into a war of intrigue, religion, and magic that changes her life and the course of the universe forever.
HBO’s first full trailer showcases the starry cast that includes Lin Manuel Miranda, Ruth Wilson, and Clarke Peters as well as the massive Victorian-inspired world they inhabit. Though His Dark Materials is ostensibly a young readers series, as you can see from this first glimpse, it crafts a dark world where nothing is as it seems and magic, theology, and science are all interconnected. The eerie tone of the trailer bodes well for the prestige mini-series which many fans are hoping will be a more faithful adaptation of Pullman’s thoughtful and serious fantasy books.
We’ll have to wait a little bit longer to get a release date as the trailer doesn’t include one, but for now, we’ll be picking apart every moment of the trailer whilst luxuriating in all of the detail, drama, and decadence of this exhilarating and exciting tease of the world of His Dark Materials.
