Benedict Cumberbatch Joins SPIDER-MAN 3 as Doctor Strange

The upcoming third Spider-Man film from Sony and Marvel Studios just got a little bit of extra magic. The Hollywood Reporter announced Benedict Cumberbatch is joining the third Tom Holland Spidey film as Doctor Stephen Strange. The Master of the Mystic Arts is filling the adult mentor role for Peter Parker, a role once occupied by Tony Stark in Homecoming and then Nick Fury in Far From Home.

Of course, this adds fuel to the fire that we are going to see some Spider-verse action going on for the third film. We know that WandaVision is introducing the concept of alternate realities and the multiverse to the MCU. And the second Doctor Strange movie is called In the Multiverse of Madness. But the biggest tell that Spidey 3 will involve alternate realities is the fact that Jamie Foxx is coming back as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Are we about to see a full on incursion of different Spider-Man universes?

If we are dealing with these kinds of alternate reality shenanigans, it means that Spider-Man 3 is going to blow up Peter Parker’s world. In his own movies, Peter’s adventures have been far more Earth-bound. But maybe after the events of Infinity War and Endgame, Peter’s world is about to open up in unbelievable ways. And he will need a guide to help him along. Who better than Doctor Strange?

The third Spidey movie is currently set to come out in December 2021. That’s a few months before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It just might be the lead up to a full blown Crisis on Infinite Earths style MCU event. I know, that’s wrong cinematic universe but the comparison is sound. Jamie Foxx posted (and quickly took down) a fan made image of his Electro looking down on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, along with what looks to be Toby Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man.  The third MCU Spider-Man film has suddenly become a whole lot more interesting. Hopefully Miles Morales is along for the ride too!
