2020 has seen a lot of amazing movie releases. There’s even been a resurgence of drive-in screenings! But some of the year’s most highly anticipated movies were delayed. While that was a total bummer, it now means that 2021 has the potential to be one of the most stacked cinematic years ever.
While we still don’t know what the future holds when it comes to releases, we’ve put together a list of all the movies (delayed and otherwise) that we’re most excited to see whenever and wherever it’s safe to do so! From superheroes to sequels, martial arts to monsters, it’s gonna be a big year!
Reboots! And Remakes! And Sequels! Oh My!
Mortal Kombat
Date TBD (HBO Max/Theaters)
Could 2021 be the year of the big budget martial arts movie? We certainly hope so. Mortal Kombat could be the spark that lights the flame in that regard as Warner Bros. releases the highly anticipated new adaptation of the classic fighting game.
Candyman
August 27
The trailer for Nia DaCosta’s Candyman sequel and soft reboot got us super excited when it released earlier this year. So it was with much sadness that we saw the movie face delays. But now it means we get to look forward to DaCosta’s imaginative take on the classic horror icon.
Godzilla vs. Kong
May 21 (HBO Max/Theaters)
The big boys are back! After much monster-mashing, the biggest showdown is coming. While it seems like the pair will face off against each other, we’ll probably get some good team-up action here too. It’ll also be interesting to see what this historic fight means for the rest of the Monsterverse.

Big Studio Superheroes Are Back, Baby
Warner Bros.
The Suicide Squad
August 6 (HBO Max/Theaters)
James Gunn makes his DCU debut with this kooky take on the titular team. Long gone are the Ed Hardy aesthetics and edgy editing. This looks like solid, experimental superhero fun. Plus, with a cast of characters like this, how could we not be waiting with bated breath?
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
July 9
Shang-Chi is a really underused character; hopefully his film will rectify some of Marvel’s longstanding issues with Asian representation. It would be amazing to see this stellar cast and crew reinvent him for a new generation.
Untitled Spider-Man three-quel
December 17
Perhaps the most anticipated of the 2021 MCU movies. With casting like Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx, the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 looks to bring a live-action Spider-Verse to life. Let’s just hope they’re not planning to erase Miles from this one, since MCU Peter already stole his best friend.

Intriguing Indies and Original Movies
The Green Knight
Date TBD
We cannot wait to watch the wicked looking Green Knight in 2021. Directed by David Lowery, the epic historical fantasy centers on Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless nephew who heads out to find the legendary Green Knight.
Last Night in Soho
April 23
Anya Taylor-Joy has had quite the year. Her smash hit show The Queen’s Gambit became a Netflix fave and the long-awaited New Mutants finally slithered from the shadows. But we’re really excited for her psychological horror collaboration with Edgar Wright. Sounds perfect.
Malignant
Date TBD (HBO Max/Theaters)
Though we don’t know much about Malignant, the fact that it’s an “original thriller not based off any existing IP” makes us very excited. Oh, and did we mention it’s from the mind of James Wan? The mysterious story comes from Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Akela Cooper. Sounds intriguing.
