Layered Bologna Cake Is the Cruelest Trick

Frosted layered cake. Just thinking about those three words brings excitement and joy to many a person’s tastebuds. But what if the “frosting” was ranch dressing and the “cake” was bologna? This may seem like a cruel trick, but it’s a very real recipe and one we’re not sure we’re willing to try.

Best Bites‘ Facebook page has put up a 60-second video dedicated to this devastating deception. Had you not read the description you might be fooled! It starts out with a bowl of cream cheese and ranch dressing mix. So far so good—sounds like a great summer dip.

The nightmare begins when you see the spread is going onto a single slice of bologna. Not ideal, but we’re willing to hang in there. Until you realize there’s another slice, then another, then one more, totaling 12 slices of bologna and ranch dip piled high into the world’s ickiest mountain.

Then the invisible chef dares to frost the so-called cake with even more ranch dip, treating it like a delicate sponge cake. Heavy-handed piped orange cheese frosting adds to the decor, and the whole thing is topped off with slices of Spanish olives.

This cake is actually a real Southern specialty and was even mentioned for a hot minute in the 2002 Reese Witherspoon film, Sweet Home Alabama. And while some people call this a delicacy, the word “cake” should never be used so carelessly.

In the cruelest off-season  April Fool’s trick there ever was, when the cake is cut, its pink layers even go so far as to resemble a perfectly constructed dessert. In the words of Michael Corleone, “It’s easy to fool the eye but it’s hard to fool the heart.”
