It’s been a year since we lost genius director/artist David Lynch. However, he would take comfort in knowing that his great filmography lives on. And perhaps his most recognizable work of all time remains Twin Peaks. The 1990 TV series, its prequel feature film, and its 2017 revival series, remain his signature piece. And it’s inspired other artists over the years. And also, extremely silly videos. Via Boing Boing, we’ve learned about an Instagram user named dave_thecatpiano, who plays famous tunes on his Meowsic interactive cat piano toy. And now, he’s done Angelo Badalamenti’s haunting “Laura Palmer’s Theme” from Twin Peaks, and it’s pretty hilarious.
Even though composer Angelo Badalamenti’s opening credits music remains Twin Peaks‘ most recognizable track, the haunting “Laura Palmer’s Theme” is right up there with it. The piece encapsulates the overwhelming sadness around the tragically murdered Homecoming queen, portrayed by Sheryl Lee, who is the heart of the entire Twin Peaks story. But hearing it done with cheesy cat meows has us legitimately cracking up. Some things are so dumb, they just circle back to being brilliant. And if David Lynch and Badalamenti were still with us, we’re pretty certain they would see the humor in it all.

The account dave_thecatpiano has a metric ton of videos, and most of them are pop hits. They range from classics by Fleetwood Mac, to contemporary hits from Taylor Swift, and even Kesha. But there is a version of the Game of Thrones theme, as well as the Peanuts theme music that Snoopy loves to dance to. But we’d like to see even more music from David Lynch films done with kitty kat meows. Mulholland Drive, perhaps? Or even Blue Velvet? We’d be here for any of those. But we’d award special points to them if they did a Cat Piano version of Toto’s music from Dune. Now that would be transcendent.
