Rian Johnson Creating Mystery TV Show Starring Natasha Lyonne

Ever since director Rian Johnson blew us all away with the murder mystery Knives Out, we’ve been wanting more detective stories from The Last Jedi and Looper director. Aside from a Knives Out sequel, we’re now also getting a new hourlong detective series from Johnson starring Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne. The series, called Poker Face, has already received a ten-episode first season order from the Peacock streaming service.

Rian Johnson will serve as creator, writer, and director of the original series. He will also executive produce alongside his longtime producing partner Ram Bergman. This is Johnson’s first big push into the television realm. Natasha Lyonne is also a producer on the series, along with her partner at Animal Pictures, Maya Rudolph. The combination of all these talents has us pretty giddy with anticipation.

In a statement, Johnson said, “I’m very excited to dig into the type of fun, character driven, case-of-the-week mystery goodness I grew up watching. It’s my happy place. Having Natasha as a partner in crime is a dream, and we’ve found the perfect home at Peacock.” A “Case of the Week” mystery sounds very much like a modern day version of Murder, She Wrote. And we are very here for that concept. Johnson’s breakthrough film was the neo-noir Brick, so mystery stories are indeed his passion.

No word yet on when Poker Face starts shooting, or when it’s meant to start dropping episodes. We imagine they are still in very early stages of the creative process. Still, hopefully it’s not too early to get Lady Gaga to rerecord her signature song as the show’s theme song. Maybe a slowed down, spooky version?  Someone involved with the show has had to have thought of this already, right? Whatever they do with the theme song, we can’t wait to watch this one.
