We’re big fans of the YouTuber Hildegard von Blingin’ here at Nerdist. You might know the name from the “Bardcore” videos that makes the internet rounds every time there’s a new upload. The Canadian content creator takes popular contemporary songs and redoes them as medieval-style tunes, changing the rhythm and lyrics to fit the begone era.
In the past, the channel covered everything from Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” to Radiohead’s “Creep.” But their latest offering might be our favorite yet. Behold, the medieval cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
We couldn’t think of a better pairing-up of styles if we tried. It’s amazing how Parton’s lyrics lend themselves so beautifully to an older era transformation. Now, the pleads not to “take my man” become “take my lord.” The whole thing sounds positively Shakespearean, honestly.

Dolly Parton’s classic ballad has been covered by just about everyone (we especially love The White Stripes’ haunting and mesmerizing take on the song), but this one is way up there. It gets extra points for creativity—we seriously love the detail given to each line. We also love the hilarious and appropriate accompanying artwork, which depicts a man entangled in the fiery locks of another woman while the songstress looks on with dissatisfaction (and a little bit of attitude).
