Thirty years ago, the world of Super Mario Bros. came to the big screen, in a big budget live-action film. And, sadly, it didn’t go so well with the critics or the box office. It’s taken a while to bring the classic Nintendo game back to the big screen, but it’s finally coming as an animated film. Chris Pratt leads the all-star cast, voicing Mario. And we finally have the first teaser trailer for the Super Mario Bros. animated movie, along with the a new teaser poster for the upcoming film. Nintendo debuted the first look at the film at New York Comic Con and online. Watch the Super Mario Bros. trailer:
Here’s the official synopsis for the Super Mario Bros. animated film:
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
All of these talented folks have contributed to some truly great animated films over the past few years, so here’s hoping they can bring that same magic to this iconic universe. Ever since 1985, the Super Mario Bros. game franchise has maintained its status a staple of pop culture. It’s high time it came back to movie screens the right way. We imagine many elements introduced in the film will find themselves working their way into the Super Mario World lands at the Universal Studios theme parks in the near future.
Super Mario Bros. hits movie theaters on April 7, 2023, in North America.
