ETERNALS Writers Tease the Coming of Galactus to the MCU

For years, Marvel fans have wondered when the mighty Galactus would make his way into the MCU. Since he’s traditionally a Fantastic Four villain, many believed the upcoming MCU version of Marvel’s First Family might be where he debuts. A Fantastic Four movie with director Jon Watts is on the docket after all.

In a conversation with The Direct (via Comic Book), Eternals screenwriters Ryan and Kaz Firpo chimed in with their thoughts on the possibility of the Devourer of Worlds showing up in the MCU. Perhaps even in an Eternals sequel. Here’s what Kaz had to say (and SPOILERS for the end of Eternals from here on out):

“Galactus is an amazing, amazing character, and villain. We are, you know, obviously setting the stage for intergalactic, cosmic, megalith confrontations. Especially when you kill a space god—and then the space god comes and kidnaps you and plans to judge Earth, I think the door is very much open for world-eating villains…”

For those of you unfamiliar with the comics, Galactus is an ancient cosmic being. One older than this universe. He feeds on the energy of planets, leaving them dry husks when he’s done. And if people lived on those planets? Too bad for them. He announces his imminent arrival with a herald, warning the planet of its impending doom. The first such herald was the Silver Surfer. In Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, the Galactus story played out similarly to the comics. Only he wasn’t a giant person, so much as a giant black space cloud.

Despite their visual similarities and similar massive size, in the comics, the Celestials and Galactus aren’t really related. Their similarities mainly come from the fact that Jack Kirby designed and conceived of them both. But Kevin Feige and the other Marvel Studios writers always have a way of simplifying complex Marvel Comics mythos. It would make sense that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Celestials empower Galactus to cull the worlds that they have judged as unworthy.

Even if there isn’t an Eternals 2, that cliffhanger ending can’t go unanswered forever. So an MCU Fantastic Four movie could be where it’s eventually answered. But almost certainly, the Big Guy is coming at some point. And there had better be someone on Earth to stop him. Galactus is the very definition of “an Avengers level threat.” And so it’s going to take a whole lot of heroes to stop him.
