The trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu were starting to fill our hearts with an ominous feeling. There was a lot of conversation about what would happen to Grogu if Din Djarin wasn’t there to protect him. And, in truth, the idea that Grogu will likely live many years beyond Mando is a bittersweet tragedy that always haunts the pair’s Star Wars narrative a little bit. So the natural question arose. Was Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin going to die in The Mandalorian and Grogu? Well, now that the movie is out in the world, we know for sure. Does Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin Die in The Mandalorian and Grogu?
NO! Din Djarin does not die in The Mandalorian and Grogu. It is NOT that kind of movie. Although the themes of Grogu growing up and learning to fend for himself are strong in The Mandalorian and Grogu, Din Djarin’s death is NOT yet a part of that equation. Instead, Din Djarin takes the time to teach Grogu important life lessons, such as putting his armor on correctly and never trusting the Hutts, to prepare him for how life may unfold as he grows up. But The Mandalorian and Grogu is definitely not a tragedy. And Grogu is nowhere ready to lose Din Djarin yet.
Mando Does Get Poisoned Pretty Badly, Forcing Grogu to Imagine His Death
That said, we do feel like Grogu is confronted with the idea, if not the reality, of Din Djarin’s death in The Mandalorian and Grogu. While escaping from two Hutts called The Twins, Din Djarin gets poisoned by a Dragon Snake. This poison leads him to fall into a coma that could prove fatal and certainly teases the notion of Din Djarin might die on The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Grogu, not knowing what to do, simply does his best to take care of him. Fortunately, being adorable and helpless, but with just enough smarts, Grogu manages to make a friend who helps provide him with an antidote for the Dragon Snake poison. But this friend cautions him that Din Djarin might not wake up… That he might die.
Grogu builds Mando a shelter, keeps watch over him, and helps take care of him in a truly beautiful The Mandalorian and Grogu sequence. And we feel like in that time on The Mandalorian and Grogu, Grogu also learns that it is possible Din Djarin could die and leave him behind. And that’s something he probably hasn’t ever before considered in this way. Happily, the antidote works, and Din Djarin does not meet his death in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Grogu is a little older, a little wiser, and maybe a little sadder, but he’s not alone.
Will Din Djarin Eventually Die in the Star Wars World?
The truth is, eventually Din Djarin will die, and Grogu will likely survive him for a long time. Those of the Yoda ilk can live for a thousand years. Meanwhile, Din Djarin is just a human. The time will surely come when Din Djarin will die, and Grogu will live. But will it come on screen? We couldn’t begin to say for sure, but it does feel like a beautifully painful tragedy worth exploring in the Star Wars world. In fact, it kind of reminds us of Pedro Pascal’s fate in The Last of Us.
For now, Grogu and Din Djarin live happily ever after for another day. But they’ll return to Star Wars sooner or later… And who knows what will happen when they do.
