At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige announced the MCU’s insane Phase IV lineup. It will ensure the franchise remains an ever-present part of our lives for years to come, and will also introduce all new characters and stories. But the slate was so jam-packed it didn’t include some very important—and very profitable—superheroes. Black Panther 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 didn’t make the cut. Carol Danvers’ inevitable followup wasn’t given a release date either, despite coming off more than $1.1 billion in global box office sales a few months earlier. But now Disney is ready to go higher, further, and faster once again, because they have begun development on Captain Marvel 2.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Disney has begun initial work on a followup to last year’s global smash hit Captain Marvel. (Which somehow came out less than a year ago, March 8, 2019, even though it feels like it came out nine years ago.) Megan McDonnell, whom Disney and Marvel have also employed in as a writer for the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, will write the script for the developing sequel.
It’s unknown who will serve as director for the project. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck co-wrote and directed the first movie, but Disney is not placing them in charge of the sequel. However, they might not be finished with the MCU entirely. The duo is reportedly in discussions to continue with the MCU and could ultimately end up leading another Disney+ series. In the meantime, Marvel is reportedly looking for a woman to direct Captain Marvel 2, with a targeted release date sometime in 2022.
Black Panther 2 is scheduled to come to theaters on May 6, 2022. Last year, Disney marked the 2022 dates of February 18, July 29, and October 7, 2022 for unannounced releases. We would expect to see Carol Danvers return to the big screen on one of those dates, if development of the film meets the deadlines it needs for a 2022 release.
We don’t quite know what Brie Larson’s intergalactic warrior will be dealing with in her next venture. She became a full-fledged Avenger after the Snap, but she’s served more as a cosmic independent contractor than as one of Earth’s regular protectors. She was busy keeping the entire universe safe, only returning to Earth to help defeat Thanos.
Our biggest clue about Captain Marvel 2 might have come from Spider-Man: Far from Home. A post-credits scene revealed that the film’s Nick Fury and Maria Hill were actually the Skrulls Talos and Soren. The pair were filling in on Earth while Nick Fury was overseeing the construction of a massive space station. We think that structure will be prove to be S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department), a companion organization to S.H.I.E.L.D. that should play a big role in the MCU. And if any Avenger is going to visit it, it’s Nick Fury’s old friend who can fly through space.
And she better bring Goose with her. We don’t mind waiting so long for a sequel. But that “cat” better be part of the development plans.
