While the most iconic vehicles in sci-fi history are things like spaceships and light cycles, one of the most beloved is just a car. Well, not just any car. One that also happens to be a time machine. Yes, we are talking about Doc Brown’s DeLorean from the Back to the Future trilogy.
At the time, the DeLoreans, with their sleek design and gull-wing doors, seemed like they really were from the future. Sadly, the DeLorean company went caput in 1982, so all of those cool-looking cars became highly-priced vintage relics. Until now, that is.
Thanks to Futurism, we’ve learned that the DeLorean Motor Company has teased a brand new all-electric version of the car that gained worldwide fame from Back to the Future. Although technically this is a different company altogether that bought the name DeLorean. This week, the company showed off several images of its Alpha 5 vehicle, at least how it looks in its concept stage. And it brings all the ‘80s DeLorean vibes. Just looking at this car, you can almost hear Duran Duran playing.
The Alpha 5 (which, let’s be honest, already sounds like a sci-fi name) will be formidable, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just under three seconds. Of course, to achieve time travel according to Doc Brown’s calculations, you need to go from 0 to 88 mph. And that will take a mere 4.35 seconds. Hill Valley, here we come? (Oh wait, it doesn’t include a Flux Capacitor. Never mind).
DeLorean is set to debut the Alpha 5 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August. But it’s not expected to roll out to the public until sometime in 2024. So the car of the future is still a ways off into the actual future. Seems appropriate.
We’re sure some Back to the Future superfan is already saving their pennies to buy one of these bad boys, ready to create the ultimate cosplay accessory. Let’s just hope this doesn’t give anyone any ideas about a reboot. Give us a new version of the car, sure. But just leave the original classic movie alone, please.
