Tom Hanks, a.k.a. America’s Dad, is selling his airstream. The trailer was his beloved movie home for nearly every film he’s made since 1993. The 1992 Airstream Model 34 Limited classic trailer is up for auction at Bonhams. The privately owned auction house for fine art and antiques, motor cars, and jewelry has been in business since 1793! So naturally, it would be the premier place to sell his home away from home there.
Hanks’ ‘silver bullet’ Airstream was his on-location home since 1993’s Sleepless in Seattle through 2017’s The Circle. The legendary actor had the trailer made to his own specifications. He explained via a press release that he had “spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly decor and horribly uncomfortable furniture.”
So now, whoever purchases the piece of Hollywood memorabilia will not just get the trailer, but all the furniture Hanks filled it with. Yes, that includes a bathroom mirror outfitted with ‘Hollywood lights.’ He is an actor, after all.
Hanks used the trailer for more than just sleeping or learning his lines. It turns out, some bonding with his costars on some iconic sets happened there too.
“I shan’t forget night shoots on Gump and The Green Mile with the windows open and the cool air coming in,” he shares with the auction house. “Or the time Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, and I watched a Buster Keaton documentary on the TV – before running through the Forest Lawn cemetery in our Apollo 13 costumes to pay homage at his grave.”
However, if living like a movie star, at least part-time, isn’t one of your goals, fear not. Bonhams has a “Tom Hanks Collection.” The collection includes the 2010 Ford F-450 Super Duty pick-up that would pull the airstream to various locations. Plus, there’s also a customized 1980 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser and his high-performance 2015 Tesla Model S P85D.
The 33ft Airstream Trailer has an estimate of $150,000 too 250,000. But if fans of America’s Dad have their way, that price will start to rise, and soon.
