SMILE Trailer Turns the Friendly Gesture Into a Death Omen

Horror can take just about anything and make it scary. A phone call, a car, dolls, mirrors, the sun, and even wigs lead to a bloodbath. But an upcoming film may have all of them beat. As its name suggests, Smile takes the universal gesture of friendliness and good cheer and connects them, and transforms it into a death omen. And, if the Smile trailer is any indication of what we will see, this film might set a new standard for the genre.

The Smile movie trailer starts off as it should with a short montage of people smiling. Except this isn’t the regular and friendly smile you’d get from a neighbor or friend. It’s wide and extremely creepy with soulless eyes to match. We then meet a doctor (presumably a therapist or psychologist) who goes through a strange experience with a patient. The patient is obviously going through some trauma, claiming that she is seeing something that no one else can see. And that something is smiling at her. Things take a wild turn when she sees it once again in front of the doctor.

Afterward, she looks at the doctor with a creepy smile and a sharp object in her hand. We don’t see what happens but we do know that she dies from giving herself a Joker-esque scar. The doctor soon discovers that there are many other victims… and one survivor. She gets a death omen from a patient but will she become the next death? We will have to wait and see.

Here’s a quick synopsis of the Smile movie for more context:

After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.

Smile’s trailer is certainly catching viewers’ attention for good reason. Let’s see what the film has to offer when it hits theaters on September 30.
