SHE-HULK Creators on That Savage Megan Thee Stallion Cameo

Just three episodes in, She-Hulk has already dealt us some seriously impressive cameos. Not only has the current MCU Sorcerer Supreme become a major player, but we also saw the return of Abomination and the introduction of some new Marvel Comics characters too. But after the third entry into the newest Marvel TV show, there’s only one cameo that we’re all talking about. Yes, Megan Thee Stallion makes her MCU debut playing herself in a hilariously funny legal case that has to be watched to be believed. So how did She-Hulk get a global superstar like Megan Thee Stallion to be a part of the newest entry to the MCU? And what did it feel like to be in her presence? At a press junket we asked director Kat Coiro and head writer Jessica Gao those important questions.

Episode three of She-Hulk presents a very courtroom drama. Jen’s ex-colleague and general creep Dennis “Buck” Bukowski is taking an Asgardian Light Elf to court. Why? Well, the shapeshifter catfished him by making herself look like none other than Megan Thee Stallion. Though the savage rapper is a perfect fit, the creative team wrote the story without knowing that she would be gracing the screen. “We didn’t know who it would be,” Goa said. “We just knew that we needed a famous, successful, and beautiful female celebrity. It could have been a musician. It could have been an actor. It could have been a model. Then depending on who it was, we would probably have to tailor the story a little bit. We went through so many different possibilities and how it would change the story.”

As Coiro explained, the most important and vital thing that they needed for the character was “an amazing celebrity who never in a million years would date Dennis Bukowski.”

It was Jameela Jamil—the actress who brings She-Hulk antagonist Titania to life—who came up with the iconic suggestion, as she’d worked with Megan Thee Stallion on the cult HBO Max reality series Legendary. “One day Jameela said, ‘What about Megan Thee Stallion? I think she would do it.’ And that just stopped all of us. All of our hearts stopped. It took our breath away.”

Even just the idea of Megan Thee Stallion actually being in She-Hulk felt too good to be true, but it immediately focused the team’s vision for the cameo. “Everyone else fell away,” Gao shared, “because if that’s really true, if we can get her, then there is no one else for this. If you can have Megan Thee Stallion, why would you even consider anybody else? We are all such huge fans, but especially Tatiana [Maslany], she is probably the world’s number one Megan fan.”

The She-Hulk star’s love for Megan Thee Stallion led to the cute final scene of She-Hulk and Megan together, Coiro revealed. “Tatiana was the most excited. So that little scene of them dancing was actually added to give them a scene together.”

It was as much of a match made in heaven for the creators as it was for viewers! “What a dream,” Gao gushed. “I have to imagine nobody would have ever thought that we would see Megan Thee Stallion in the MCU. And that was the same for us, we dared not to dream it.”

Luckily, as She-Hulk episode three proves, some dreams do come true!
