SPY KIDS Reboot Adds Zachary Levi, Gina Rodriguez, and More

Oh Shi..itake mushrooms, another reboot is heading our way. And this time it’s Spy Kids. That makes total sense because the ’90s and early oughts are making a comeback in a big way. We have Warheads hard seltzers, nostalgic Play-Doh, we are even getting That ’90s Show. So why shouldn’t we also have a Spy Kids reboot as the cherry on top? And it looks like this Spy Kids reboot is coming to Netflix.

According to Variety, “Robert Rodriguez, who created the original series, has returned for the upcoming reboot, which he will write and direct.” So that puts it in some very good hands. Deadline announced who will play the new spy family: Zachary Levi, Gina Rodriguez, Everly Carganilla, and Connor Esterson.

Although there aren’t many, or really any details beyond that, it doesn’t exactly feel hard to imagine where a new Spy Kids movie might go. The Spy Kids franchise is all about a family business after all. The original movies revolve around Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara) and their parents, played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino. Together, they make up a family of spies.

The natural course of things seems to be to reveal the next generation of the Cortez family and follow them on their new, modern adventures. We don’t know if the new family connects to the Cortez one at all. But it would be cool to get their parents and grandparents to appear in the show. It would certainly make for a fun callback to some of our youth. But Netflix does share the Spy Kids reboot will introduce the world to “a new family of spies,” so maybe the new family stands on its own. Deadline recently revealed that Billy Magnussen and DJ Cotrona would also star in this movie.

We’ve got our spy suits on and are ready to go. Do you hear that? It’s the sound of 2001 knocking on our door.
