MR. POOPYBUTTHOLE’S ‘Beautiful Day’ Pixel Art Video Is Surprisingly Sweet

Ooooooweeeeeeee who doesn’t love some Mr. Poopybutthole backstory? The lovable, shootable, poopable prodigy’s life is full of touching moments, as well as the kind of melodrama that can only come from an existence filled with hardship, and a lot of dying pets. Which is why it’s so much fun to see a new pixel art video of Mr. Poopybutthole’s “Beautiful Day” posted to the official Rick and Morty twitter account, in which the Smith family friend earns some surprisingly saccharine downtime from being a pill-shaped punching bag.

The video, created by pixel artist Paul Robertson (a.k.a. Probzzzz), adds on to the kind of Mr. Poopybutthole narrative we’ve come to know and love from online one-offs like “The Poop In My Pants,” and in-show developments like those that took place during the fourth season’s third episode. And while Robertson’s video is almost certainly not canonical in any way, it’s still nice to imagine that this is indeed the world that Mr. Poopybutthole inhabits—one in which he doesn’t have to deal with bullet wounds and some kind of prescription medication addiction.

An hour-long lo-fi beats track featuring Rick and Morty pixel art animations by Robertson.

In the one-minute clip, we watch as Mr. Poopybutthole, his wife, and child, drive through a forest, up to a cozy little lakeside cabin. Once inside, the trio of “fourth dimensional phantom” creatures (Dan Harmon’s words), proceed to play a game of cards, relax by the warmth of a golden log fire, and then spend the rest of the night behaving like the little, loving family they are. Rick does show up about ten seconds before the end of the video with a grimace on his face that would seem to signal some kind of incoming torture for Mr. Poopybutthole, but instead, Rick simply gives him a gentle nod of approval.

This isn’t the first time the official Rick and Morty twitter account has posted some of Robertson’s pixel art; in fact, the official account frequently retweets Robertson’s stylized Rick and Morty clips. To fill in the details for those wondering, according to Vice, Robertson “has been working for years to help the GIF format and 8-bit aesthetic transfer from Web 1.0 to 2.0,” and has somehow seemed to have developed a semi-official connection to the show. Robertson created an Adult Swim promo featuring Beth and Jerry for Rick and Morty‘s third season, and his stylistic version of Harmon and Roiland’s series has been posted by the official Adult Swim Facebook and YouTube pages.

Robertson’s other Rick and Morty pixel art videos can be viewed on his twitter and Instagram accounts, which both contain more clips featuring Mr. Poopybutthole. Like the one above, for example, which shows Mr. Poopybutthole… getting blasted multiple times and being left face down in a pool of his own blood. Oooooooweeeeee that looks painful!

What do you think of Mr. Poopybutthole’s “Beautiful Day”? Do you want to see Robertson animate an entire episode of Rick and Morty in this pixel art style, or do you really just want more Mr. Poopybutthole? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, Mr. Poopypeople!
