If you love the spooky aesthetic of Tim BurtonOpens in a new tab at all, then you can draw a direct line between his work and the artwork of illustrator and author Edward Gorey. For much of the mid-2oth century, Gorey’s illustrations were both Gothic and whimsical, usually depicting scenarios inspired by Victorian and Edwardian settings. Even if you don’t know the name, you’ve seen the artwork.

Now (via Laughing SquidOpens in a new tab) we’ve learned of an artist named Kerry BellOpens in a new tab, who has created a series of illustrations featuring Game of Thrones charactersOpens in a new tab in full Gorey style. With 150 characters from the show to choose from, Bell picked her favorites to denote a letter from the alphabet. Each of these is in homage to Gorey’s deliciously dark alphabet book The Gashlycrumb Tinies. Down below are some of our favorites.
A is for Arya, because lets face it she’s the coolest. Who else was it going to go to, Allister Thorne? Get outta here. Arya all the way.
B is for Bran Stark, who is the most goth character ever. Not just on Game of Thrones, but most goth ever period. He’s like a medieval Joy Division song brought to life. How fitting that he’s the second letter of the alphabet here.
D is for Dany, “her children ablaze.” Yeah, judging from Season 8 episode 5, her children ablaze and lot of other children ablaze. (Too soon?)
Dany’s dearly departed Khal Drogo gets to represent the letter K. And in true Gorey tradition, it’s actually Drogo’s corpse that gets the honor.
In retrospect, Ygritte was basically right about a certain character knowing nothing.
The Edward Gorey inspired art was so liked by Game of Thrones fans that the artist collected them all into a comic called “Monarchy Madness”Opens in a new tab, which is now on sale in her Etsy storeOpens in a new tab.
