The Coronavirus has not only put the lives of thousands at risk, but it has changed the entire map of the entertainment business for the at least the spring of this year….if not beyond. First, No Time to Die moved its release date to the fall, and then major pop culture events like Emerald City Comic-Con and Coachella were postponed. Now, Marvel Studios is the latest to become affected by this crisis. According to a report coming from Deadline, the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has halted their production in the city of Prague, Czech Republic.
The upcoming Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan starring series began filming there on Friday, March 6th. But with the the government of Prague closing schools and creating other restrictions on travel and public gatherings, this cancellation seemed inevitable. The cast and crew have been instructed to return to Atlanta, where the majority of the shoot took place. This is actually the second time in as many months that this series has forced to halt the shoot outside of the states. The first time was when production had to move from Puerto Rico to another location, after the 6.4 earthquake there in January made shooting unsafe.
It’s unknown if the Puerto Rico scenes were then moved to Prague. However, that would mean two different foreign locales were deemed unworkable due to tragic circumstances. It’s very likely that to get this show ready for its August premiere date, they are simply going to have to make certain parts of the U.S. look like overseas locations using effects and other digital trickery. The early 2000s series Alias made Southern California look like everything from Moscow to Baghdad for its entire run, so it can be accomplished. They can probably do much better with modern resources too.
There are still several Disney+ Marvel Studios series that will go into production soon. It will be interesting to see if Ms.Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, or any of the other Marvel series will be affected by the Coronovirus outbreak. It’s likely that many of their planned overseas shoots will be cancelled as well. But truth be told, some of the shoots even in North America might be affected. Expect a lot more soundstage filming, as was done with the recently completed WandaVision series.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will directly follow up from the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw Steve Rogers pass on his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). But his transition into being the new Cap isn’t going to go smoothly, as judging by the trailers, it appears that the United States government has set their sights on someone else becoming the new Captain America. It wasn’t until the past few years that Sam became Cap in the comics, following a long period where Bucky took on the name and shield. We expect events to play out differently in this new series however, and hopefully won’t have to wait to long to see Sam in all his red, white and blue glory.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is currently set to premiere in August on Disney+.
