It’s time to take home the MCU movie 7,000 years in the making. Chloé Zhao’s stunning superhero epic Eternals is now available on Blu-ray and digital. To celebrate, none other than Makkari herself, Lauren Ridloff, has taken the time out to teach us some ASL. In the radical exclusive clip, Marvel’s first Deaf superhero shares some power words! You can watch and sign along with the awesome video below.
Looking as celestial as ever, Ridloff shows us how to sign words and phrases like Makkari, Eternals, “family,” and even “I love you.” It’s pretty wonderful to see Marvel understanding the impact that Ridloff and Makkari have had on the MCU and its fans. Cinema has long been the place where we communicate and connect with others. This video is a great example of how even outside of the stories they tell, films of all kinds can expand our understanding of each other’s experiences. That includes superhero movies. Plus, it’s just pretty rad and rare to see any kind of PR asset for a massive Hollywood movie solely released in ASL and captions.
In case you haven’t had a chance to watch Eternals yet, it centers on a group of millenia old aliens who are brought together to protect Earth from the Deviants. It’s an epic and original take on superhero lore inspired by Jack Kirby’s comics. Ridloff is joined on-screen and in an intergalactic adventure by an impressive ensemble cast. Gemma Chan (Sersi), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lia McHugh (Sprite), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Barry Keoghan (Druig), Don Lee (Gilgamesh), Kit Harington (Dane Whitman), Salma Hayek (Ajak), and Angelina Jolie (Thena) all appear in the film.
Fun fact: You can actually learn how to sign each of the Eternals’ names in the video!
Sadly, we don’t learn how to sign “Drukkari,” a.k.a. the name for the popular fan pairing of Druig and Makkari. It’s one of our favorite MCU ships. So Lauren, if you ever want to make a video showing us how to sign ship names, let us know!
