Although Deadpool 2 is still many months away, debuting summer 2018, the very first teaser poster for the film has been released via Collider, and it is strikes exactly the irreverent tone you’d expect for the Deadpool sequel.
The new poster is a spoof on a famous Norman Rockwell painting of an All-American Thanksgiving from the 1940s called “Freedom From Want,” which features all the major characters together at the dinner table about to dig in. We see Josh Brolin as Cable standing right behind Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, who is serving up the Thanksgiving turkey to his pals.
Sitting at the table are fellow cast members Zazie Beetz as Domino, Monicana Baccarin as Wade Wilson’s girlfriend Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapicic as Wade’s X-Men buddy Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder. And yes, that is good ol’ Stan Lee featured prominently as a framed photo on the wall.
The original Deadpool film had a ton of tongue-in-cheek marketing for months leading up to the film, and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if we get similar silly marketing around holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day.
This well-known Thanksgiving painting has been spoofed many, many times before, from both Marvel and DC Comics in particular on their comic book covers. We’ve seen the Fantastic Four’s Invisible Woman serving up the turkey, as well as Power Girl doing the honors with Superman at her back for an issue of Justice Society of America. And or course, MAD Magazine has taken a crack at it as well. But this might be the first time a movie poster has nailed it so perfectly. And we expect nothing less from Reynolds and company.
