ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS Smashes Digital Sales Records

According to analysis by Super Data, the game has sold more than 5 million copies since it debuted on March 20. According to the Nielsen report, Animal Crossing: New Horizons smashed the digital game sales previously held by Call of Duty: Black Ops IIIIIf you can believe it, the game also matched the combined first month sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon Sword and Shield. The game was also number one in digital sales despite the lack of physical stores that are still operating. Clearly something about the chill vibes of the cute game spoke to people trying to survive the COVID-19 crisis.

This is a huge moment for the series and for Nintendo, who were already celebrating record Switch sales in March. The console sold more in that month than it did during its original launch, which is basically unheard of. It’s pretty wonderful to see a game that has brought so many people joy make a ton of money as it means we’ll likely get more of the same. We are huge fans of Animal Crossing: New Horizons so we couldn’t be happier about this news. Maybe now we’ll get more immersive and thoughtfully designed games for fans of something a little more relaxing?
