As a planet, we’re all still collectively grieving the loss of Dolly Parton, who recently passed away at age 80. In that time, folks have been sharing their favorite Dolly memories, television moments, and songs on social media. And now, one of her most iconic movies is getting a theatrical re-release in her honor. And going to see it will actually benefit a good cause. Twentieth Century Studios is bringing Dolly’s iconic comedy 9 to 5 back to theaters, with ticket proceeds going to The Dollywood Foundation. This supports its flagship program, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
This weeklong run for “9 to 5” begins on October 9. Disney announced the 9 to 5 theatrical re-release, fittingly enough, on September 25, or “9/25.” This is now designated as “Give Like Dolly Day.” It will be a new annual celebration asking folks to make a contribution to improve a child’s life, and honor Parton’s lifelong mission to spread literacy to children everywhere. So why not go to a theater, enjoy one of Dolly’s most iconic cinematic performances, and in doing so help contribute to a cause that was near and dear to her heart?
9 to 5 famously also stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. This brilliant satirical comedy is about women in the workplace, who scheme to get revenge on their sexist boss. And it remains relevant to this day. The film became an enormous hit when it came out in 1980, behind only The Empire Strikes Back in terms of box office success. It especially struck a chord with women across the country, just as feminism and the concept of workplace equality were starting to become mainstream. And, of course, the theme song by Dolly herself became an anthem. If you go see the film in theaters, you’ll have the song stuck with it in your head for days. But really, that’s not so bad, right?
