Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduced another mutant to the MCU. So, who was it and what does their own history mean for the franchise? And how many other characters did they join on this growing list? Here’s every mutant in the MCU so far, along with those we know will join them and some who might be.
Confirmed Mutants in the MCU
Kamala Khan
The first official mutant in the MCU is also one of the franchise’s youngest heroes. Ms. Marvel‘s season one finale revealed Kamala Khan is a mutant. (Unlike in Marvel Comics’ where she’s an Inhuman.) Her grandmother’s magical bangle unlocked Kamala’s latent mutant abilities. That raised the possibility countless other people are walking around Earth-616 unaware they are also mutants. And that’s likely been true for a very long time.
Namor
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever confirmed what we expected: Namor is a mutant. But while Namor of the comics hardly ages and lives far longer than most people, we were not prepared for the length of his big screen counterpart’s life. The MCU’s Namor is nearly 500 years old, showing just how long mutants have been around.
Professor X (Earth-838)
One of the most famous mutants—on both the page and screen—formally joined the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That’s where Patrick Stewart reprised his iconic role as Dr. Charles Xavier. That Variant lived on the parallel world of Earth-838, though. We have yet to meet any X-Men on Earth-616. But Professor X having identical Variants throughout the multiverse suggests he has a counterpart on the MCU’s primary world. And that also means every mutant (and actor) from the Fox era X-Men movies might now be considered MCU mutants.
Mr. Immortal
One of the MCU’s first mutants was not a person we would have predicted. At least not before we saw She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which introduced some deep cut Marvel Comics characters. The show’s litany of obscure figures included the mutant Mr. Immortal. He can’t die, but rather than use his power for good he uses it to get out of marriages, of which he’s had many over his long life.
Mutants Coming to the MCU
Deadpool & Wolverine
He might be a foul-mouthed Merc, but Deadpool is coming to the family-friendly MCU. We’ve known that since Disney purchased Fox. The real shocker came when Ryan Reynolds announced Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is coming with him. The X-Men star will play Logan (at least) one more time, bringing one of the most famous mutants ever to the Mouse House.
MCU Characters Who Might Be Mutants
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver
There was reason to think the MCU’s Scarlet Witch might be a mutant before WandaVision. Then the Disney+ series gave us another clue Wanda Maximoff really is. The show implied she was born with powers that began to manifest long before exposure to the Mind Stone. It’s possible both her and her late twin brother Pietro survived their encounter with the Infinity Stone and because they carried the X-gene (or something similar).
Monica Rambeau
Kamala Khan needed a powerful energy source to unleash her dormant mutant powers. That might be exactly what took place with the Maximoff twins. So is that what happened to Monica Rambeau, who gained hers after passing through Wanda’s hex multiple times? If that’s how mutant powers work in the MCU then we could see an influx of mutants after the Snap, the Blip, Tony Stark’s snap, and the death of a Celestial. Monica (a.k.a. Spectrum) might be just the only time we saw it happen.
Possible Mutant Variants
Quicksilver of the X-Men
WandaVision‘s Evan Peters sure moved like his speedy X-Men character, but he wasn’t the same person. Agatha Harkness didn’t steal a Variant Quicksilver from a parallel world. ended up being actor Ralph Bohner imbued with magical witch powers. But that doesn’t mean he’s not a Variant of his X-Men counterpart. The multiverse has come to the MCU, and that means infinite mutants and Variants have come with it.
