Powered by Geek & Sundry

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show, featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

By now, you’ve got the Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting sitting on your bookshelf and you’re anxiously waiting to get your hands on The Chronicles of Exandria. These two volumes of amazing Critical Role art and worldbuilding deserve a bookmark that’s just as epic as the tales within them. Why not make your own?

Channel your inner Taryon Darrington by building a Doty all your own. Use the one-of-a-kind bookmark to hold your place in a beloved Critical Role tome or your favorite novel.

What You Need

  • Shiny silver scrapbook paper
  • Brown cardstock paper
  • A small feather
  • Blue rhinestone stickers or blue enamel dot stickers
  • 5/8″ paper hole punch
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Black permanent marker

Get Started!

Begin by tracing the ruler the length of the silver scrapbook paper, creating a strip about 1 1/2″ wide by 12″ long. Cut it in half to make two strips 6″ long.

Punch three holes out of the silver scrapbook paper. (If you don’t have a 5/8″ hole punch, you can trace a circle from a tealight candle or something of similar size.)

Cut one small strip of the silver paper, about half an inch wide and two inches long. This will be Doty’s neck.

Trim two edges of one circle to make Doty’s oblong head. Use the shape you just cut as a template for the other two circles, and cut the same shapes.

Next, cut one of the shapes you just made across the top and the bottom to create Doty’s forehead and chin.

Line up the two long strips you cut previously, and trim them by about an inch. Take one of the pieces and cut a slightly rounded edge; this will be Doty’s chest.

It’s now time to assemble your very own automaton.

Flip one long silver strip over. Glue Doty’s neck to the top, shiny side facing up.

Flip one head piece over, and glue it to the back side of the neck piece.

Next, glue the other head piece on top of the neck, and the other long silver piece on top of the body. Glue the chest on top.

Glue Doty’s forehead and chin to the face, and let all pieces dry.

While Doty’s body is drying, measure and cut a small square out of the brown cardstock paper, approximately an inch and a half by an inch and a half. (It should be slightly larger than the body.)

Cut another piece of the brown paper that’s just as wide, but only half the length. This will be Doty’s backpack flap.

Cut two thin pieces of brown paper the length of Doty’s chest for the backpack straps.

Glue the flap on top of the larger brown piece of cardstock.

Next, flip over the bookmark, and glue the small feather (Doty’s quill) to the top of the large strip so that it sticks out to the side. Glue the backpack on top of it.

Flip the bookmark over and glue the two thin brown strips to Doty’s chest. Let all glue dry completely.

Stick two blue enamel dot stickers or blue rhinestone stickers for Doty’s eyes.

Finally, use the black permanent marker to add rivets on both the front and back of the bookmark. Your very own Doty is complete!
