A24 released its first trailer for The Green Knight way back in the before times, February 2020. From the moment we saw it, this new spin on the classic Arthurian tale became one of our most highly anticipated movies of the year. A lot has changed in the world since that teaser premiered. But not how much we want to see this movie, which we’ll finally get to do in 2021. And if the film’s latest trailer—which is even better, stranger, and more dramatic than the first—is any indication, it will be well worth the wait.
“An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.”
If this is your first introduction to the movie, you now understand why it’s so high on our list of “must-sees.” This trailer is a saga unto itself. It spans many lands, creatures, and time, telling a story that is even bigger in scope than we initially though. And we don’t even understand half of what we’re seeing.
We are familiar with the concept of honor, and also the foolish things it makes us do sometimes. Like volunteering to fight a giant, green, supernatural knight who can hold is head in his hands.
The Green Knight comes from director and writer David Lowery (A Ghost Story, The Old Man & the Gun). It also stars Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, and Ralph Ineson.
The Green Knight finally (FINALLY) comes to theaters this summer, on July 30.
