Pizza Hut Now Serving a Plant-Based Sausage Topping

The future of fast food is here. And the future is plant-based. McDonald’s will soon add a meat substitute to its menu. Other big franchises like Dunkin’ Donuts, KFC, and Burger King already have their own available. Now, another well-known company is getting into the ever-growing market. Pizza Hut will be the first national pizza chain to offer a plant-based option, with its new “sausage” topping.

Pizza Hut has announced it has teamed up with Beyond Meat for a new plant-based meat option for its pies. It will mark the first time a nationwide pizza chain has offered a meat-substitute item.

“Packed with the bold flavor and savory satisfaction you’d expect in traditional Italian sausage,” Pizza Hut says the topping is made with a “mix of classic Italian herbs and spices like garlic, onion, paprika and fennel seeds.” It will be available on two Beyond Pan Pizzas:

  • Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza: “Pizza Hut’s classic cheese pizza topped with plant-based Beyond Italian Sausage crumbles that feature an authentic blend of Italian seasonings, bringing a taste that’s Beyond Belief.”
  • The Great Beyond Pizza: “A specialty pizza crafted with fresh veggie toppings that include tomatoes, sliced red onions and tangy banana peppers, served up on Pizza Hut’s classic Original Pan crust paired perfectly alongside the savory Beyond Italian Sausage.”

The chain is confident customers won’t know it’s not their real sausage topping. “I’d challenge anyone to go try the new Beyond Pan Pizza and tell the difference. I shared it with friends and family, and they couldn’t,” said David Graves, chief brand officer, Pizza Hut, in a press release. “The Beyond Italian Sausage is rich, juicy and has the signature Pizza Hut flavors—pizza lovers everywhere are going to love it.”

The Beyond Italian Sausage is also available as a single topping option on regular pizzas. You can also order each specialty pie with Pizza Hut’s Original Stuffed Crust, Hand-Tossed, and Thin ‘N Crispy crusts.

The Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza and Great Beyond Pizza won’t be around long. At least not right away. Each is only available “while supplies last” at all traditional Pizza Hut locations. But if the meatless-sausage proves to be a hit, we expect it to become a permanent menu option. Plant-based foods aren’t fast food’s future. They are its present.
