Luther is back! The popular BBC series starring Idris Elba as the titular London detective has been off-air since 2015, when a two-episode fourth season aired over the holidays. Now, its long-awaited return is just around the corner, and we have our first look at its brand new trailer, which promises another dizzying, terrifying season. Check it out!Your eyes are not deceiving you: That’s Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan in the final frame of the trailer, the psychopathic foil to Luther who allegedly died in season four. We’ve known for a while that Alice would return this year, but seeing her in the closing moments is still a great surprise. As for the rest of the trailer, well, there’s a lot to unpack here. Set to a haunting cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” the trailer shows us DCI John Luther, who is back on the scene, investigating the crimes of what looks to be a budding serial killer. Luther is joined by his new partner DS Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku), and, according to the official synopsis, the two are “confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption.” That sounds a lot like the work of one Alice Morgan, whose genius-level I.Q. allowed her to get away with the murder of her parents in season one. Is she luring Luther into a new trap, or will she help him decode a new master’s web? That appears to be the big question going into season five.Luther will return to BBC One next month for a four-episode season, which is expected to air on BBC America sometime in 2019. As for the show’s future, Elba recently told Empire, “This season is not the end. But there are some real changes that will happen.” We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us.
