Thor: Ragnarok might have made Taika Waititi famous the world over, but before he made one of the best films in the MCU, he teamed up with Flight of the Conchord‘s Jemaine Clement to write, direct, and star in one of the best comedies of the 21st century, the 2014 vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows. The instant cult classic about the less-than-glamorous lives of the undead will soon spawn not one but two TV spin-offs, and the trailer for the first, Wellington Paranormal, promises things aren’t any less weird in New Zealand, but they are just as funny.
The show’s first teaser (via comingsoon.net) reintroduces us to officers Minogue (played by Mike Minogue) and O’Leary (Karen O’Leary) who both appeared in What We Do in the Shadows. The pair have been tasked with investigating the strangest reports to come across the Wellington police department’s desk, where it’s not uncommon to run into vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons, and people who crawl up walls.
The show looks like a cross between The X-Files and Hot Fuzz, with all of the comic sensibilities we loved from What We Do in the Shadows. The only downside for now is that while Wellington Paranormal comes to Television New Zealand on July 11, it still remains without a U.S. distributor. Fortunately, FX is currently producing its own spin-off series titled after the film, about three vampires who have lived together in New York City for hundreds of years. That show’s first season is set to premiere in the spring of 2019.
With the run Taika Waititi is on, by next year he might also get to say he has also made two of the best shows on TV.
