Tamagotchi Is Back with ’90s Colors and Flocked Styles

Updated, January 24, 2018:

If you’re ready to relive your youth or introduce a whole new generation to the intense responsibility of caring for a digital pet, Bandai has your back with new Tamagotchi devices. These Tamagotchis have all the beloved features you need and remember: the same portable shape, pixelated art, and the love of a virtual pet. Maybe you missed out the 20th anniversary Tamagotchi devices that were released in late 2017, but don’t worry. Today’s your lucky day. You can pre-order a mini Tamagotchi device from your favorite games retailer in one of six exclusive colors from the ’90s (you can really commit to replicating your past) or as a baby pink or baby blue flocked version. Flocked. Tamagotchis. We are blessed.

These are the first ever flocked versions of Tamagotchis, and as we all know, making things fuzzy makes them better. The flocked devices will be available in limited quantities, so don’t wait.

Original post:

The nineties were a magical time. There were Doc Martens, Lisa Frank, Walkmen (Walkmans?), Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan rom-coms. Technology was also advancing at a rapid, exciting rate so toy companies took it upon themselves to use those new developments to offer kids new ways to show their parents they weren’t quite ready for the responsibility of a puppy by introducing the Tamagotchi. Tamagotchis were egg-shaped keychains that housed a tiny, pixelated creature who relied solely on your interactions with it for its food, exercise, and general well-being. Needless to say, the nineties were literally littered with neglected Tamagotchis.

But we’re all older and wiser now. Some of us have pets, plants, or actual human children that we manage to keep alive no problem. We’ve grown up, gang. We could totally keep a Tamagotchi alive today! That’s why it’s exciting to share the news that Buzzfeed recently reported: Tamogatchis are coming back.

Bandai will be releasing six different Tamagotchi designs (called Tamagotchi Friends now) to allow all of us nineties kids with Tamagotchi blood on our hands the opportunity to vindicate ourselves. Take a look at the designs:

Even better, a Gamespot review calls the updated Tamagotchis a bit less high-maintenance than the ones we grew up caring for. Essentially, you’ll only be responsible for caring for its feeding and cleanliness–no discipline training or anything like that (though I personally can’t recall doing that as a kid–I guess mine never lived long enough to need discipline). Hopefully the resurgence of these tiny pet-friends will allow us a chance of redemption and allow a new generation of Tamagotchi owners to raise happy, healthy digital pets. We hope…

The new Tamagotchis will be in stores just in time for the holiday season, hitting shelves November 5. So be sure to pick yours up! And please, for the love of all that’s good, remember to feed the damn thing.

Are you excited that Tamagotchi is coming back? Will you be getting yourself one? What other 90’s toys would you like to see make a comeback? Tell us in the comments!
