There’s always a lot to be worried about when a beloved film gets the remake treatment. That was certainly the case when Amazon Studio announced plans to make a new version of Dario Argento’s acclaimed 1977 Italian horror film Suspiria. But those concerns were offset somewhat when recent Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino came aboard as director, and after the first unveiled footage surprised ( and horrified) audiences at CinemaCon earlier this year. Now we have our first trailer, and it looks incredible. Take a look.
Appropriately ’70s throwback-style, but still crisp and very much it’s own thing, no?Here’s the official synopsis:
A young American aspiring dancer travels to Germany to perfect ballet dancing at a famous ballet school in Berlin. While attending, students begin to disappear and she soon finds out that the school has a dark history involving witchcraft and gruesome deaths.
Dakota Johnson plays the aspiring dancer Susie Bannion and Tilda Swinton plays her teacher Madame Blanc, while Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and original Suspiria star Jessica Harper round out the cast. This is Guadagnino’s first film after the critically revered Call Me By Your Name last year, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Director. He is re-teaming with Johnson and Swinton, who both starred in his 2015 film A Bigger Splash.
Something else to get excited about with the Suspiria remake: Radiohead legend Thom Yorke is doing the soundtrack. If that doesn’t fire you up, hopefully the throwback cinematography and witchy visuals get you onboard.
What do you think? Did this trailer convince you that Suspiria could be a surprisingly relevant new horror film, or are you still mad it’s being remade? Let us know in the comments!
