Black Widow made her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Eight years later, she’s had key roles in multiple MCU films, but she hasn’t received her own solo movie yet. It’s criminal. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has mentioned focusing on Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow repeatedly over the years, saying in 2016 that “I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow…We think she’s an amazing character.” And finally, her standalone film could be moving forward.
Sources have told The Wrap and Variety that Marvel has hired a writer for the movie, Jac Schaeffer. There isn’t a greenlight, and the film isn’t on the packed release slate we know about–the project is in very early development. But having a writer is an important step, and it’s the first real outward indication that progress is happening. It can’t happen quickly enough. I mean, this film is a long time coming–it should have been the first solo female-led superhero film. Though it is late–very, very late, Marvel–I’m still looking forward to Black Widow taking the spotlight and doing something super badass to it.Schaeffer has previously penned the animated Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, so she’s already worked with Disney. No, that’s not exactly the tone anyone would want in a Black Widow film, but she’s also written the sci-fi movie TiMER starring Emma Caulfield and “The Shower,” a short about an alien invasion at a baby shower starring Anne Hathaway. A Black Widow film could one of the least weird things she’s written.
