Several X-MEN Films Coming to Disney+ This Summer

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the original X-Men film. Though they’re not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they got the Marvel movie domination ball rolling. And that first X-Men movie is one of four films in the franchise coming to Disney+ this summer. The 2000 blockbuster arrives on the service on Friday, August 7th. X-Men: Days of Future Past drops July 10th, X-Men: Apocalypse on July 17th, and finally, The Wolverine lands on Sepember 4th. The 2005 Fantastic Four movie is also coming to the streaming service on August 28th.

But that’s not the only Marvel action coming to Disney+ this summer. Ant-Man and the Wasp flies in on Friday, August 14th, making Disney’s MCU library almost complete. The only missing titles from the MCU at this point will be Sony’s two Spider-Man films, along with The Incredible Hulk. Universal distributed the latter.

It will be interesting to see how Disney incorporates the Fox Marvel films into their Marvel section on the service. Right now, they have the 2015 version of Fantastic Four sandwiched in between Avengers: Endgame and Iron Man in the interface. If they continue this formatting, it could lead to brand confusion. The average viewer might believe they are all MCU films. It might be a wiser move to have an MCU section, along with a separate Fox Marvel section. For that matter, how about putting the MCU films in chronological order?

I am also curious to see if Disney+ censors these movies in any way. While the first X-Men doesn’t contain any nudity or f-bombs, X-Men: Apocalypse has one utterance of the f word by Magneto. Charles Xavier does the same in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Remember, Disney+ recently edited Daryl Hannah’s bare bottom in the PG-13 Splash to make it more family friendly. So don’t be surprised if you hear a bleep where that f-bomb was supposed to drop.

No word yet on when X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and X-Men: First Class will land on Disney+. It might be awhile before Dark Phoenix arrives since it’s currently on HBO Max. As for the profanity laced, uber-violent Deadpool movies, they should pop on the service on the first of Never at Zero o’clock.

This summer is the perfect time to revisit many of these X-Men films. Of the four that are coming to Disney+, two are genuinely good, a second is pretty decent… and then there’s Apocalypse. But even that one has some fun Quicksilver moments. Days of Future Past in particular is a high water mark for the series, and it might have been best to leave the franchise at that end point. Before the inevitable MCU Mutant reboot, why not have an X-Men Disney+ marathon this summer?
