WONDER MAN Season 2 Canceled at Disney+

Wonder Man brought a fresh storytelling method to Marvel’s television shows with a buddy adventure. Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery’s journey to securing roles in a Wonder Man film was full of laughs, drama, and some emotionally resonant moments. Wonder Man’s season one left off with the duo heading to parts unknown, so fans were delighted when Disney renewed it for a second season back in March. Now, months later, Variety reports that Wonder Man season two is cancelled at Disney+.

WONDER MAN Season 2 Will Keep Its Quirky Tone and Bromance Vibes

This is shocking not only because of its recent renewal. Wonder Man also gained a big Emmy nomination for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. It was a show that many critics loved to their surprise, too. And we barely got to see Simon start to come into his own as a hero.

He only wore the suit for a few brief minutes, and made the very bold choice to basically tank the career he’d always wanted to break Trevor out of prison. In a Marvel world where everything feels like intense homework and in need of many explainers, Wonder Man was just a chill funny show with good characters and an unlikely bromance. There were already clearly plans for what would come next, and now we will not get that anymore.

Recently, director Destin Daniel Cretton shed a bit of light on the situation, noting he does not believe this cancellation is Kevin Feige or Marvel Studios’ decision. He offered, “I love that show to death. If it were up to me, we would be making that show. And I do believe that if – and I know this sounds weird – but if it were up to Kevin [Feige], we would be doing that show. And I’m just talking, I don’t fully understand the business of streaming, but if the business was right, we would be making that show because I know [Feige] loves that show as much as I do. It’s a bummer. I’m heartbroken about it. But I need to fully understand the why.”

Cretton considered the idea of whether he’d make a Wonder Man movie an “interesting question,” but that “yes, he would, partially because there’s a level of public transparency missing from streaming.“ He revealed, “Then we can clearly know if it’s a success or not. It’s just very clear numbers.”

Right now, it is not clear exactly why Disney decided to cancel Wonder Man season two, but it doesn’t mean that we will never see these characters again. It is quite plausible for Simon and Trevor to appear elsewhere in the MCU in the future… Maybe even in a Wonder Man movie.
