Are we in a new era of Marvel Television? No more “One Season Wonders?” That may be the case, as Marvel Television has officially announced a second season of Wonder Man for Disney+. The announcement came via an Instagram post. The series, which was almost canned mid-production during the WGA strikes. It barely had any promotion, and Disney+ dropped all episodes at once. That’s usually a sign of no confidence. But Wonder Man, which starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley, won over critics in a big way. The audience enjoyed it too. And now, we have a second season officially.
The end of season one showed how ionic-powered actor Simon Williams achieved his dreams of becoming a movie star, after becoming friends with bumbling British actor (and former Mandarin) Trevor Slattery. The finale of season one saw Slattery taking the blame for the destruction caused by one of Simon’s superpowered outbursts and going to prison. Simon then breaks Trevor out of prison, using his flight powers for the first time. Yes, it sets up a second season. If you’d asked us a month ago if we’d ever see these characters again, we would have said, “Probably not.” But we’re happy to be wrong, because Wonder Man is a concept with a ton of potential.
So what will season two even be about? We’d love to see Simon Williams go public with his powers, and the chaos that would ensue because of it. Would that end his movie stardom? Would he become his movie character, Wonder Man, in the eyes of the public? And just how did Simon get those powers, anyway? It’s quite possible he’s a mutant in the MCU. We hope that creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest take some big swings in the upcoming season. Between this news and Daredevil: Born Again already shooting a third season, we are here for this change in Marvel Television toward shows that actually run several years. More of this, please.

Season one of Wonder Man is now streaming on Disney+.
