A couple of weeks ago, Will Smith got the internet buzzin’ when he posted a video suggesting that he could be in a new The Matrix project. We eventually learned that his tease was for “Beautiful Scars, a new song and music video with Big Sean. While many people were upset at being “fooled,” I thought it was a good way to grab people’s attention. And a collaboration between the two makes sense considering both of them lean into inspirational rap music. (Big Sean even wrote a book about success and it is pretty great.) Now, the music video for “Beautiful Scars” by Will Smith and Big Sean is here and it pays homage to the original The Matrix film.
Despite Big Sean’s last name literally being Anderson, he absolutely does not take on the Neo role in this video. It starts with Big Sean and Will Smith sitting across from each other like Neo and Morpheus did in the infamous “red pill or blue pill” scene. Sean gives Will a chance to either take the blue pill and everything in his life will remain the same or take the red one and go back to fix his biggest career mistake.
He takes the red pill, of course, and then we get to experience a taste of what it would’ve been like if Will Smith took the role as Neo in The Matrix. Part of it looks like he’s filming while other parts are literal scenes from the film, like the “bullet time” stunt and the fighting simulation. The visuals are a great homage to The Matrix but don’t forget to tune into the lyrics. Everyone needs a boost these days and what better way to get it than from Will Smith? In the meantime, we will look forward to him linking up with Michael B. Jordan for I Am Legend 2.
