The 2026 Oscar nominations are out in the world. And we’re pretty excited to celebrate some of our favorite genre films and their many nods. But one movie was surprisingly absent from list of this year’s nominations. Wicked: For Good was snubbed by the Oscars and did not receive one major nomination in 2026. This is shocking because the first Wicked movie received 10 Oscar nominations across the board in 2025, including for Best Picture, and took home two Academy Award wins for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. But when it came to Wicked: For Good, the Academy had nothing but a snub to offer the musical movie.

So what happened? Why was Wicked: For Good snubbed at the Oscars? Well, for one thing, the sequel movie just was not as good as the original Wicked film. That’s partially the movie’s fault. It made some weird choices, like the sex cardigan and a couple of weak original song additions, but it’s also partly down to the fact that the second half of Wicked, the musical, is known to be weaker than its first. Wicked: For Good did what it could. But it was naturally less of a home run. Wicked: For Good also failed to achieve the same level of cultural relevance as its first movie, which is definitely a contributing factor when it comes to Oscar snubs.

We do think it’s wild that the Academy had nothing for Wicked: For Good in the areas of Best Original Score or Best Sound, which, again, Wicked was nominated for in 2025. But we guess Academy voters didn’t like the new songs any more than we did.
All this said, Oscar nominations are not the measure of a movie. Wicked: For Good was a fun romp and an enjoyable time at the theater. It made people happy and that’s great. So what if Wicked: For Good was snubbed by the Oscars! It gave us Scarecrow Fyiero, a gift that truly will never stop giving.
