Why Did Vision and Ultron Take Their Specific Human Forms in VISIONQUEST?

Anytime there’s a movie or series from a world that’s full of lore and connections, there will be a plethora of questions. That’s no different for VisionQuest, which is somehow already nearing its season finale. We have gotten a ton of answers so far to questions about Vision’s state of mind, what Tommy has been up to, and why Vision decided to show mercy to Ultron. But one question that perhaps some fans haven’t considered is starting to surface in this show. Why did Ultron take his specific form in VisionQuest? And, for that matter, why did Vision choose the human form that he has? Let’s get into it.

Episode 7 takes us back to 1939, where we meet Phineas Horton. He looks exactly like the human avatar that Vision uses today, and he’s working hard on J.I.M. (Joule Individual Machine). His hopes are to make this machine work so it can essentially “live” forever, unlike his son. His dedication to it causes his wife and daughter to leave him.

This machine is obviously a prototype that, decades later, led to the creation of AI like Ultron, who later created Vision. This explains why Vision would take that form because it was embedded into his code/subconscious. And, Vision goes deep into search memories looking for a source code, which leads him to having a poignant conversation with both J.I.M. and the original form of Vision. They both essentially tell him that 1) the answers he seeks are in Vision and 2) he is in fact Vision. This finally gets Vis to admit who he is and face his losses and brokenness. J.I.M. gives him a piece of mind stone and Vision is finally back in business.

Meanwhile, Ultron is determined to figure out what happened to Jo, and it links to him in several ways. First, the loft space that Ultron was in looks like where Jo once resided. And, after discovering the full truth about her having a partner and how she didn’t want to sell to Stark, we see that her partner is someone who looked like Vision’s human avatar.

The episode ends with Vis and Jo shut down completely at the Horton house as this guy, who is very much alive and not just Ultron playing games, essentially has them hostage. He is, in fact, the Client the entire time. His connection to Jo will surely be explored more in the finale as well as any other ties he could have to Vision and/or Phineas specifically. Let’s see how it all ends as we gear up for the finale of VisionQuest.
