VELMA Trailer Introduces a Whole New Scooby Gang Into SCOOBY-DOO’s World

It’s been a big moment for Velma Dinkley. First, the Scooby-Doo icon finally got to come out as queer. We’ve all known that Velma is queer for a long time, but to see it with our own eyes was incredible. Second, we finally got to see the trailer for Velma’s new animated show, the one where she’s the star. And honestly, we are in love with this take on Scooby-Doo already. Not to mention, it’s exciting to see a whole new Scooby Gang in this Velma trailer.

The Velma trailer brings us into a whole new world of murder, mystery-solving, and fake ghosts. Only this time, there’s a bit more high-school drama involved. Jinkies, not frenemies! The official synopsis tells us more about the show. It reads:

VELMA is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and under appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.

This hilarious Velma teaser is one big parody, and it mocks every complaint sure to be levied against the show. Skillfully, this hilarious teaser trailer lets Velma’s possible naysayers know the show is one step ahead. We love this bit of meta. And we absolutely adore Velma referencing Scream.

The cast of Velma includes Constance Wu as Daphne, Sam Richardson as Shaggy, and Glenn Howerton as Fred, and, of course, Mindy Kaling, the show’s executive producer, as Velma. Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, and “Weird Al” Yankovic also star, among others. No other roles have been announced.

Classic IPs like Scooby-Doo never truly go away, and the more they embrace their inherent silliness in the many ensuing years make them last much longer. For more than 50 years, a scared dog, a stoner, and three other people, have taken our screens through adventures both funny and frightening. Now Velma—the smartest one of the bunch, obviously—gets her time to shine.

Velma will premiere on HBO Max on January 12, 2023.
