There was a lot to love about season one of Netflix’s The Witcher. Namely everything. The show, from its cast and characters, to its fight sequences and story, was insane in all the best ways. But one element of the fantasy series has stayed with us from the first moment we saw it and always will. Because “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” lives in our head now, where it will forever play on a continuous loop. That might sound like a bad thing, but only if you haven’t actually heard it. Jaskier the Bard’s lyrical tribute to the Continent’s White Wolf was an instant all-time classic. However, it’s not the only version that exists, because the show’s composers wrote multiple renditions. And now they’ve shared one of those alternate takes.
The “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” solo piano version is exactly what we need played the next time the Law of Surprise leads to an impromptu wedding.
The show’s composers, Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli, have released one of the many other versions of Jaskier’s memorable tune that they wrote for the show. This piano take (which we first heard about at Winter is Coming) perfectly highlights what we love about the song. It starts off melancholy, as though it’s going to be a dirge. But then it picks up, as a rush of energy elevates it into a triumphant celebration of the white-haired hero it’s praising.
We’re not sure if the Continent has any piano players, but this would be a popular arrangement if they did.
And while we’re thrilled to have another version of a track we’re genuinely obsessed with, it makes us even more desperate to hear another version we know exists. We got a chance to speak to Belousova and Ostinelli earlier this year. They told us that one of the many alternate takes that exists is a rap version.
Yes. A rap version. A rap version of “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” exists.
Maybe the Continent doesn’t have any pianos. But hopefully it has some rappers.
