Last year, Chris Carter, the director of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, announced the release of a director’s cut. Disney had originally announced its release in June, but there was no sign of the new cut. Now, the new version, called The X-Files: I Want to Vrach Frankenshteyn, is going to come out on August 14.
I Want to Believe was a 2008 sequel taking place after the events of the (at the time) nine-season show. It features the return of beloved characters from the series as they work on a mysterious missing persons case.
The X-Files series was one of the longest-running sci-fi series on TV, airing from the ’90s to the early 2000s. It was rated TV-14 when it aired, and I Want to Believe was rated PG-13. Now, the new director’s cut will be rated R, as Carter reportedly cut a lot of content that 20th Century Fox deemed “too scary.” A lot of horror aspects were taken out for the PG-13 cut, and now they’re coming back better than ever.
The additional delay past June 11 was a result of Carter making final edits to the movie, according to Polygon. In return, though, fans can expect a much more terrifying experience involving body horror and psychic elements.
The X-Files content won’t end there. Ryan Coogler, director of Sinners, is currently working on a reboot of the series. One of the original X-Files stars, Gillian Anderson, said fans should “have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be f***ing cool.”
So, if you’re an X-Files fan, you have a lot to look forward to in the near future. While the rebooted series doesn’t have an official release date yet, Disney has confirmed an August 14 release date for the newly cut movie. It will be available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
