THE VAMPIRE LESTAT’S Ghost Scene Comes Straight from the Books

One of the most powerful scenes in The Vampire Lestat so far occurs in episode six, “Montreal.” The scene features Louis (Jacob Anderson) and Lestat (Sam Reid) going to a powerful witch, who they hope can summon the spirit of their vampire child, Claudia (Delainey Hayles), to get closure. Let’s just say, it does not go smoothly. But this scene is not from Anne Rice’s original book The Vampire Lestat, yet it is from Rice canon. This summoning of Claudia’s ghost takes place in Rice’s much later novel, Merrick, now pushed forward chronologically in the IWTV/The Vampire Lestat timeline. But do we really see Claudia’s ghost in The Vampire Lestat? And what are the consequences of this séance? Here’s how it all goes down, in harrowing fashion, in the novel Merrick and The Vampire Lestat TV series.

The main plot of Anne Rice’s 2000 novel Merrick, book nine in her Vampire Chronicles series, focuses on Louis and David Talbot, Lestat’s fledgling, recruiting a witch named Merrick Mayfair to contact the ghost of long-deceased Claudia via a séance. We then get an in-depth exploration of who Merrick is, her past, and her family ties to the Mayfair clan from Rice’s popular Lives of the Mayfair Witches series. Of course, Mayfair Witches has its own AMC live-action adaptation series. (And you can snag the book series here, if of interest.)

What Happens During the Summoning of Claudia’s Ghost in Merrick?

In Merrick, Louis seeks to gain forgiveness from Claudia for her long-tortured existence and her death over a century earlier, a tragedy Louis was unable to prevent. The death of Claudia has haunted him for 150 years at this point, and Louis is looking for any sign his daughter is in a better place. What he gets is, alas, quite the opposite.

Merrick informs Louis that in order to summon Claudia’s ghost, they need Claudia’s diary, which was in the possession of the Talamasca. David Talbot, a former Talamsca agent now vampire, manages to get a hold of it. Merrick insists Louis read the diary, and in its pages, Claudia reveals that she hated both her undead parents equally. Yet she chose to kill Lestat because she knew she could manipulate Louis much more easily. Also, she knew that she could never convince Lestat to kill Louis, whereas she could wrap Louis around her finger. But that’s only the beginning of the tough pills Louis will have to swallow.

For the ritual, Merrick Mayfair used an ancient Central American jade mask with mystical properties, as well as tokens of Claudia’s that survived, like a doll, a locket with Claudia’s photo, and the diary itself. And Louis offers his own immortal blood as part of the ritual. A ghost of Claudia appears in Merrick, and unleashes a verbal attack on Louis that devastates him. Louis says he’s ready to end his life and join her, and she says “You think that I, in death, would be united with you? I loathe you, evil father.” Our girl does not hold back.

As the séance continues, Claudia’s ghost says it would warm her soul to see him suffer, and takes a sharp jade object and pierces Louis’ heart. She tells him that she was lost in a whirlwind of souls, suffering and unable to rest, and she urges Louis to end his life, but assures him that she won’t be waiting for him on the other side when he does. Merrick breaks the spell, and condemns the ghost of Claudia back to Hell.

Louis Tries to End It All After the Claudia Séance in Merrick

After the devastating séance, Louis falls deeper into despair. He tries to walk out into the morning sunlight to die, and his skin burns badly. But he survives thanks to Lestat’s blood. Louis’ attempted suicide wakes Lestat from a long slumber, and he gives him more of his healing blood. The near-death of his beloved snaps Lestat back to reality. This blood infusion makes Louis a vampire on par with the strongest of the tribe, and finally ready to move on from the tragedy of Claudia. He falls in love with the witch Merrick and makes her his vampire fledgling. And he, Merrick, and Lestat venture off into the world.

What The Vampire Lestat Series Changes About Claudia’s Summoning and Ghost

Much of the séance in The Vampire Lestat sequence is similar to the one in Merrick. However, Lestat is present for the event in the series, unlike in the novel. It also takes place on Halloween, and in Montreal, not in New Orleans. The ghost of Claudia doesn’t stab Louis in The Vampire Lestat, but she does slam Merrick’s head on a table and break one of her teeth. She also describes her existence as being “lost in a whirlwind,” one where she’s forever separated from her beloved Madeleine.

At the end of the séance, both Louis and Lestat feel devastated by Claudia’s revelations. But it confirms things they already suspected about how she felt about them both. In the aftermath, Louis does not try to kill himself by going out in the morning sun, as he did decades prior, as seen in Interview with the Vampire season two. In fact, this entire event seems to bond Louis and Lestat further. It allows them to come together in a way they couldn’t while the guilt of Claudia’s death hung over them.

Is That Really the Ghost of Claudia We See in The Vampire Lestat?

It’s impossible to know for certain if the ghost we see in The Vampire Lestat really is Claudia. In Rice’s novel, Merrick suggests that Claudia’s ghost could have instead been a nameless, malevolent spirit. An entity that drew from Louis’ memories to inflict pain on someone in the physical realm. But both Merrick Mayfair and Louis believe it really was Claudia herself. However, the AMC series doesn’t really offer much in the way of ambiguity. It feels like we’re meant to believe that it was indeed the real Claudia, back from beyond.

Here’s What Claudia Reveals About Interview with the Vampire

During the séance, the apparition throws it in Lestat’s face that she lied to Louis about the threats he made to her on the train in season one about the vampire Bruce. She did this as a way of getting Louis to hate Lestat and help her in her attempt to kill him. This explains why Lestat wrote in pen, “It never f#@%ing happened!” over those pages in Daniel Molloy’s book. It actually didn’t occur, and it drove an almost seventy-year-long wedge between the two vampires. A wedge that now thankfully seems healed. At least for now.

Will We See the Ghost of Claudia Again in The Vampire Lestat?

It feels like Claudia has made her point, and that is that she does not wish to be disturbed by Lestat and Louis any further. Still, have the two of them ever learned their lessons? Who knows if we’ll see the ghost of Claudia again, but her presence will surely linger.

The Vampire Lestat airs on AMC and AMC+ Sundays at 9 pm ET/PT and midnight, respectively. You can snag The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice to read, if you’d like to know a little bit more about what’s going on.
