The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season one has not yet arrived on our screens. But season two of The Rings of Power is already making waves among Lord of the Rings fans. Of course, The Rings of Power season two is not a surprise. Amazon already officially renewed the show for its second season, with a five-season commitment waiting in the wings. But still, we feel so excited about all things Middle-earth right now that hearing about the show’s future feels right. And one of the first things we know about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two has to do with one of its new characters. The second season of the show will introduce the elf Círdan the Shipwright. Círdan is a fan-favorite figure, and he’s the only elf (that we know of) to ever grow a beard.
In an interview with Time, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay reveal more about Círdan’s arrival to their Lord of the Rings world. Payne notes, “We don’t want to give too much away, but one character we’re excited for folks to meet in Season 2 is Círdan the Shipwright… In the time of our story, he’s the oldest of all known elves in Middle-earth—in fact he lived so long, he had a beard.”
We can’t wait to see Rings of Power do justice to the beard of this new character.
Facial hair is a pretty hot topic in The Lord of the Rings universe, after all. As noted, Círdan the Shipwright is the only elf Tolkien ever mentions as having a beard. And that certainly makes him unique. The elf appears throughout Tolkien’s stories and joins High King Gil-galad to battle against Sauron. He also aids Elrond in urging Isildur to destroy the One Ring at Mount Doom. Though they fail, this is a pivotal moment in The Lord of the Rings world.
As The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power reveals its first season to us, we expect to get news of many new characters on the horizon. For now, we’ll do our best to get to know all the Lord of the Rings characters already coming our way in Rings of Power. The series releases on Prime Video on September 2.
