THE PRINCESS BRIDE Cast Will Reunite For a Fundraiser

Zoom cast reunions are all the rage these days. As COVID-19 continues to have a hold over our lives, it’s the perfect virtual way to keep us together and inspire joy. The casts of many classic shows and films—from Lord of the Rings to The X-Files to Hannibal—have gathered on the web meeting tool to entertain audiences. The reunions often have the added benefit of raising money for a cause.

The cast of The Princess Bride is about to join the fold. Director Rob Reiner is teaming up with cast members Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Carol Kane, Chris Sarandon, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, and Billy Crystal for a script reading that will benefit the Wisconsin Democratic Party. According to Variety, the reading will be followed by a Q&A with the cast hosted by comedian Patton Oswalt. Donations are required to watch the virtual event, although there doesn’t appear to be a minimum amount.

The move to align a classic movie with a specific political party is already a controversial one. Texas senator Ted Cruz has already spoken out about the reunion, expressing his sadness (via Twitter) for every “Princess Bride fan who wants to see that perfect movie preserved from Hollywood politics.” Many responses to Elwes’ tweet promoting the event also express some disdain.

Your mileage will vary on if you think this is a good idea or not, but politics aside, it’s exciting to think of this crew getting back together in any shape or form! Sadly, they’ll be without Fezzik, as the actor who portrayed him—André the Giant—passed away in 1993. We’re sure they’ll find some way to pay tribute and honor the beloved role.

The Princess Bride reunion will livestream on September 13 at 6 p.m. CT. You can donate and sign up here if you’re interested in watching the reunion.
