Way back in 2020, we learned that Taika Waititi was working on a Star Wars movie. Six years later, we are still waiting for that film to come to fruition. After most fans had given up hope or simply forgotten about it, recent comments from exiting Lucasfilm leader Kathleen Kennedy sparked interest in the project again. She said that Waititi has a pretty funny script and that this Star Wars project is “still somewhat alive.” Ummm ok. Waititi himself opened up about the film, saying he wants to bring back the high stakes and fun from the OG movies.

“The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back,” Waititi told Variety. “I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they’ve got so many things going on within that space. For me to do something there, it would need to be a little different and a little bit more its own thing.”
While he didn’t give any more details about what this film would entail, Waititi did reveal his favorite Star Wars movie villain. And yes, it is an answer that you’d very much expect from him: Darth Vader.
“He taps into a child’s biggest nightmare or fear, which is that your parent will turn on you and you won’t be able to bring them back,” he said about Darth Vader. “Body Snatchers is like that as well. Zombies, too, they’re great villains as a collective because it’s the idea of people you love who won’t recognize you and will want to eat your brains.”
Hopefully, as Dave Filioni and Lynwen Brennan take over Lucasfilm, they will get the ball rolling on Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film.
