Who is your favorite artist? For some people, that question is hard to answer because they love so many different singers and rappers. For others, it is the easiest question in the world. They have a staunch loyalty to a certain artist as a proud, card-carrying member of their fan group. And sometimes, that love goes overboard to the point of an unhealthy obsession. It is disturbing? Yes. But what happens when it gets deadly? Well, that’s what we get in the first full trailer for Swarm, a series by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers about a fan who gets bloody for their fave.
While the show’s previous teaser warned us that Dre (Dominique Fishback) was on some wild stuff, this trailer really reveals her life as a superfan. We see her with her sister Marissa (Chlöe Bailey) as they lie in bed and giggle about wanting to be close to Ni’Jah, their favorite singer. We see Dre marveling at Ni’Jah’s videos and ripping open a credit card to purchase expensive concert tickets. There’s nothing usual about that; however, things go awry quickly.
A seemingly normal funeral leads to a spiral for Dre, and things start to get odd and bloody. She’s working as an exotic dancer, cutting her hands, and asking people about their favorite artist in an oddly terrifying way. We get guns, blood, tears, and more as Dre goes down a twisted path that’s buzzing with murder. Overall, the Swarm trailer a delicious dive into the dark side of fandom.
We don’t really see him in the trailer but Damson Idris will also appear in this series as Khalid, Marissa’s boyfriend. And, we will see more guest stars like Rickey Thompson, Paris Jackson, Rory Culkin, Kiersey Clemons, and Byron Bowers.
Swarm will drop all of its episodes on Prime Video on March 17.
