Earlier this year, Disney greenlit a live-action Cinderella spinoff comedy from the team behind Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers team. The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaeffer will direct a script from Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. But it won’t be the first feature film about the iconic princess’ detestable kin to reach screens. Netflix will beat the Mouse House to the punch with Steps. But based on Steps first trailer, it will be a very different take than the one we expect from Disney, and not just because it’s a cartoon.
Netflix’s take on Cinderella’s sisters will tell the “real” story of a classic tale. In this trailer, Cinderella’s stepsisters aren’t evil, but they certainly are jealous. And that envy will lead all three siblings on a journey with stakes far bigger than go beyond any marriage or even one family. Here’s the official synopsis:
Think you know Cinderella’s “evil” stepsisters? Think again. Tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith (Ali Wong) steals the Fairy Godmother (Bette Midler)’s magic wand and hijacks the Royal Ball with her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu), breaking the Cinderella story as we know it and dooming the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of Priscilla (Nikki Glaser), a villainous schemer who swoops in and snatches the throne. Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.

The film, from the studio behind KPop Demon Hunters, comes from directors Alyce Tzue & John Ripa. Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, Kim Lessing produced. It also stars Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, and Peter Dinklage. And it also features a soundtrack with four original songs written and produced by Grammy nominee Justin Tranter and score by Oscar winner Kris Bowers (Bridgerton).
Does Steps mean we’re headed towards a Dante’s Peak/Volcano situation? No, not really. This looks version looks sweet and emotional. We expect Disney’s Anastasia and Drizella to be a lot less likable. But before we see them, we’ll see Netflix’s version of Cinderella’s stepsisters on November 20.
