New STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Footage Teases “Dark Rey”

Last weekend, Disney took the entertainment world by storm at the D23 Expo, an event used to announce the Mouse House’s many upcoming projects, including film and television. One brand with the strongest representation at the event was Star Wars, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy on hand to deliver a number of exciting updates on the galaxy far, far away. We got our first official trailer for The Mandalorian, the upcoming Disney+ live-action TV-series, and a sneak peek at this December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final film in the episodic saga. The fans to trekked it to Anaheim for the event where treated to some new footage of the film, which–unlike most Star Wars-related videos–wasn’t put online immediately. But lucky for us, it was only a matter of time before it made its way to the internet. This morning, Good Morning America aired the sizzle reel for the masses–and it’s a doozy.

The new footage is brief, but it’s also loaded with goodies. After a brief montage of clips from previous Star Wars films, we see a series of new stuff. It starts with our heroes on the new desert planet of Pasaana, overlooking some kind of local celebration. We then see a new shot of Leia on a jungle planet, followed by a shot of what looks like a Resistance fleet. We then see a tantalizing look at a huge number Star Destroyers, proceeding in what looks like some sort of procession. We get a look at Finn and new character Jannah, and a bizarre-looking C-3PO, who looks possessed–his eyes are glowing red. This is followed by what looks like a giant red laser shooting at a planet (which looks like new planet, Kijimi), and then an awesome moment where Rey throws her legacy saber through some trees and calls it back to her in a bit of action that looks like Thor calling to Mjölnir. We also see a new lightsaber duel between Rey and Kylo Ren aboard what appears to be the Death Star remains.

But the real money shot of this footage, and the thing everyone will be talking about, is the closing moment. After what sounds like almost enchanting music, we see a shot of Rey wearing a black hood and holding a double-hilted red lightsaber, one that has a snap function that she locks into place. Her eyes look almost dead, as if she’s possessed. Is this a vision or a dream? Or is Rey really turning to the dark side?

This footage leaves us with so many questions. We cannot wait to see how this all turns out when The Rise of Skywalker lands in theaters on December 20.
