The Skywalker Saga may be over, but there are still many mystery Star Wars films coming down the pike. And you can add another one to this ever growing list. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director J.D. Dillard, along with Luke Cage writer Matt Owens, are developing a new Star Wars film together. The details of this project are currently unknown. We also don’t know if this is for theatrical release, or if it’s something for the Disney+ platform.

Although many Star Wars series have been announced for Disney+, so far no original movies have. We expect there to be at least some in the pipeline, and this one could be it. Dillard knows a thing or two about making a Star Wars film, as he was on the set of The Force Awakens with J.J. Abrams, and not long after got his first directing job with the movie Sleight. This project joins a growing list of mysterious movies set in the Galaxy far, far away.
Here’s what we know so far about each of these mystery films.
The Kevin Feige Film
Marvel Studios
Last year, nerds everywhere we stunned when it was revealed that Marvel Studios’ guru Kevin Feige was working together with Kathleen Kennedy to develop a Star Wars film. George Lucas’ original saga is Feige’s first great love, by his own admission, so his working on something in that universe should come as no surprise. There are no details on when the film takes place in the timeline, much less when it will come out. It’s been suggested that this one is still a ways off, and that it won’t be Lucasfilm’s December 2022 Star Wars movie.
The Rian Johnson Trilogy
Lucasfilm
This set of films was announced right before The Last Jedi hit theaters. Since then, we’ve heard little about it, besides the fact that Johnson was still working on it, and continues to talk to Lucasfilm about the project. With so much content going to Disney+, it is possible this film trilogy could forego a theatrical release entirely? Imagine a big budget trilogy that pays out over a few months on the service instead of over years. Now that could be pretty sweet. The only thing known about the film is that it would remain unconnected to the Skywalker Saga, and be about brand new characters and situations.
The Taika Waititi Film
Marvel Studios
This one is the most recent on this here list of proposed Star Wars projects, announced in January of this year. As recently as the Academy Awards ceremony, Taika Waititi has been non-commital on the whole thing, which suggests that whatever it may end up being, the ink is far from dry. This all could go away, but the fact that he has directed episodes of The Mandalorian means he is definitely tight with the Lucasfilm family. Given his working with Kevin Feige on two Thor movies, it is possible that this and the Feige film are one and the same.
The (Former) David Benioff and D.B Weiss Project
Lucasfilm
Wait s sec, didn’t these guys depart their Star Wars movie trilogy less than a year after it was announced?? Well, they did. But rumors persist that other creators for the studio will redevelop whatever they were working on. We knew their project would have dealt with the origin of the Jedi Order thousands of years before the films we know. Is that now something that other filmmakers are going to take the reins on? Magic 8 Ball says “Future unclear.” But don’t count it out.
Knight of the Old Republic
Lucasfilm
This is another big maybe. Around this time last year, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned Lucasfilm was developing something tied into this iteration of the franchise, based on the video game series. Set thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga, this game had legions of Jedi Knights going up against thousands of Sith warriors. Recently, it was reported that a script had been commissioned by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island). It wouldn’t be shocking for this one to become a Disney+ series instead of a film. But current reports suggest it is indeed a movie.
Which of these films will take the mystery 2022, 2024, and 2026 slots? Will any of them? Hopefully, some concrete announcements will be coming from Lucasfilm soon.
