Who lives in a pineapple under the sea and is about to get a remastered version of his popular old video game? SpongeBob SquarePants. The kid-favorite cult-classic Battle for Bikini Bottom is coming to PC and consoles with a remastered, “rehydrated” version.
Original game publisher THQ Nordic announced they have teamed up with Nickelodeon and Purple Lamp Studios for a “faithfully remade” version of the 2003 game that saw Plankton and his army of tiny robots—made by his Duplicatotron 3000—invade Bikini Bottom. (Of course Plankton screwed up and became the first victim of his own robot army. Of course he did.) The announcement also came with a new teaser trailer, which is officially titled SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated.
“Play as SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy and show the evil Plankton that crime pays even less than Mr. Krabs. Want to save Bikini Bottom from lots of rampant robots? Of course you do! Want to underpants bungee jump? Why wouldn’t you! Want to join forces in a brand new multiplayer mode? The battle is on!”
It’s unclear what that new multiplayer mode will ultimately entail, but it should offer gamers a new way to experience Battle for Bikini Bottom, which has built a cult following over the years despite only getting lukewarm reviews when it was first released on October 31, 2003. (Man, SpongeBob has been in our lives longer than most people we know).
The only major change from the original, which sold almost 900,000 copies for the Playstation and over 700,000 for the Game Boy Advance, appears to be the developers. While Purple Lamp Studios will be responsible for this remastered version, it was originally developed by Heavy Iron Studios, AWE Games, and Vicarious Visions. Well, there is one other change. They won’t be making Rehydrated for the Nintendo GameCube this time. (Seriously, how old are we?)
And since the generation that grew up on this game are now adults themselves, the question this time will be a little different when we visit Bikini Bottom to fight some evil robots: “Are you ready, kids? What about your parents?”
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will be available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows sometime in 2020.
